Balearic Islands: Fiestas And Folklore

Balearic Islands (Spain), located in the European continent boasts of rich traditions and culture which can be dated back to the early civilizations which existed in the region. The fact that they are colorful makes them even more attractive for tourists from all across the world. People making travel plans to these islands should take out some time to go through these fiestas and plan accordingly to have a memorable experience.

To start off, one should know that different islands celebrate different fiestas. They are all celebrated on specific days more about which has been elaborated upon in the subsequent paragraphs.

Island of Mallorca:

1) mise en scène (Sollar): Second Sunday in the month of May is celebrated demarking the historical fight between the locals and the Saracens.

2) Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles (Pollenca): Celebrated on the 2nd of August every year, this fiesta is a remembrance of the battle between pirates and Joan Mas.

3) Des foguerons(Sa Pobla, Artà, Soller): This fiesta is celebrated with regional dances and fire sports. Witnessed on the 6th of January, tourists can witness horse coach procession and also see people try to climb a tree at the square Plaza Vieja.

4) Feria of Inca: This is one of the most popular of all celebrations and is celebrated for on 3 Sundays of the month of November.

5) Fiesta del Estandarte: Celebrated on the 31st of December, the place says good bye to the old year and welcome to the new year with this fiesta.

Island of Menorca:

1) San Juan: Probably the most important of all fiestas celebrated in this island, it is held on the 23rd and 24th of June every year. Characteristic of this festival is the fact that it is being celebrated without any changes for the last 600 years. It ends with unique and breathtaking performance by horses.

2) Verbenas de San Juan: Gets celebrated on the 29th June every year.

3) San Martin and Nuestra Señora de Gracia are celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of July and 8th September respectively. Both are enjoyed with medieval traditions and are followed by a show of the Jaleo.

Island of Ibiza:

1) San Antonio Abad: This festival is dedicated to the patrons of the island and is celebrated on the 17th of January each year religiously.

2) Santa Eulalia: Celebrated on the first Sunday of the month of May, Santa Eulalia is a festival full of colors with people getting to witness procession of horse coaches.

3) Nostra Senyora des Neus and Fiestas de la Reconquist: Another two of the famous fiestas, these two project the regional culture of this place.

4) Fiesta de San Bartolome: On August 24, people indulge in cultural and sports performances.

Island of Formentera:

1) Apostle Santiago: This is the most interesting of all the festivals in the island and is celebrated on the 25th of July each year. All folklore of this island can be seen during this fiesta.
